Uitsmijter, a Dutch snack that’s easier to eat than pronounce

by Mica on March 23, 2009

An uitsmijter looks to me like a heavy breakfast but to most Dutch people, it’s mostly labelled as a snack (a really heavy one). Some of my non-Dutch friends here didn’t even know what it was and they’ve been living here longer than I have!

Here’s how to do it:

  • Get one large plate. The largest you have.
  • Place three slices of bread, nicely fitting like a puzzle on the large plate. Did I mention that you need a large plate?
  • Slide some butter on it. On the bread, not the… large plate.
  • Place slices of roast beef or ham on the bread, about4 or 5 slices.
  • Top it off with 3 fried eggs!
  • On the side of the large plate, place some salad and fries.
  • Eat everything, except for the large plate.
Try an uitsmijter when you visit Amsterdam!

Oooh, this looks delicious!!!

I read somewhere that when you have two eggs for breakfast, you\’re more likely to lose weight. But three, with ham and bread? Maybe not! But it is a meal meant to be enjoyed when vacationing in Amsterdam. I will try it, but ask Marco and Kevin to help me finish it :)
