At Amsterdam's Madam Tussaud
Michael Jackson’s music was very much a part of my Childhood to my early twenties. At the Break of Dawn waking up to news from Pinky, my sister, that Michael Jackson passed away due to cardiac arrest left me in a daze and Speechless. I told my sons my sad news that an icon just passed away. “Who is it?”, they asked – Michael Jackson, I said. They asked me, “Who will be the next King of Pop?” “No one else can be the King of Pop!” I said in between silent sobs while watching Thriller. I told myself – just Beat It and Leave Me Alone or else I’ll Scream!
He provided the background music to my teenage milestones! Ah what memories. When I hear his songs, I relive those memories – as if they just happened yesterday. Didn’t we all enjoy his dance songs at those weekend parties? Rock with You has been and still is my favorite song. I was just listening to it over and over just a few days ago while doing chores.
Twenty-five years ago, my sisters helped me put together a Michael Jackson video. I had permed, curly hair and a body just like MJ! I wore my younger sister’s red jacket, a pair of black skinny slacks just above the ankles to ccomplete the MJ look, white socks and my black school shoes I bought in Harajuku… plus one silver glove! I danced and strutted a la Michael – that video was so much fun to make and watch!
A dear friend, MJ (same initials!), perfected the Thriller dance and we never got tired of watching her perform. She’s Out of My Life due to health complications. And now Michael. he was Gone Too Soon. After the albums Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad, Michael’s music faded away. I grew up, got married and was busy raising the kids. My two babies are now teens so we’ve switched from the Lion King to the King of Pop. They’re discovering my music and watched me dance a la MJ. “Go mama! Don’t Stop til You Get Enough!”
I stopped alright, but that’s because I pulled a muscle in my left arm and started walking like a zombie from Thriller. Don’t worry, there was no Blood on the Dance Floor.
Good thing I made a previous appointment with a physical therapist due to my spine and toes. After that, I asked him to check Another Part of Me – my left arm. I told him what happened. I was watching In the Closet, tried some Michael Jackson moves, then… ouch! Now, I Blame it on the Boogie! My PT exclaimed, “That was Dangerous! You’re not twenty anymore! Next time, do your warm ups before dancing!”
When I got home, it was back to listening to Michael Jackson’s songs with my sons. I didn’t want them to see their boring middle aged mom in tears. I Can’t Help It, Michael… I’ll miss you.
