Determining a good quality wine requires understanding how wine quality is determined and how that affects the price. When you understand this, you can be sure that you are making the best wine purchase for the value of your hard earned money.

It can be extremely helpful when deciding what wines to serve when you throw that wine tasting party or when purchasing wine online. There are “official” wine qualities, but you should never ignore personal taste. Personal taste is not determining wine quality, but if you don’t like the wine, then it doesn’t matter what “official” quality it is, or how much it costs.

When two glasses of wine, of the same variety, are poured in two separate glasses, little difference can be seen from the two. The most likely difference will be the price tag on both of the bottles, which vary greatly. It is impossible to determine which of the two glasses is of better quality since they look the same. So what makes the difference between a higher quality and lower quality wine?

The more expensive the wine does not necessarily translate to a higher quality wine. Nor does our personal taste. The color, variety, production method, origins of the grapes, taste and viscosity are general factors to determine the quality of wine. Higher quality wines are usually matured in oak barrels for a longer period of time. These are the main factors in determining the official quality of wines.

What it all comes down to though, is personal taste. No matter the official quality of wine, personal taste is the final factor which will make you decide whether or not you will purchase a certain bottle of win. If there is a wine which is the most expensive and highest rated among all the wines, and you don’t like this wine, it is unlikely that you will purchase it.

In my experience of searching for a good affordable wine, I learned some important things to consider before ever picking up that bottle. I probably learned more than I’ll ever have learned about wine online. The wine making process, the laws behind production of wine, and how the quality of wine is determined. With this collective information, it was easy to finally achieve my goal of finding that perfect bottle of wine at the perfect price. Learning to throw a wine tasting party can also be a fun way to learn about wine ratings.

Wine tasting is not as hard as you think. You don't need to have formal training and anyone can do it. As far as etiquette is concerned, the ladies are normally served up before the men. Be prepared to be given bottled water served at room temperature at your wine tasting party. You might find this peculiar but the water is used to clean the roof of the mouth out ready for the next sample of wine. Make sure that the water you are given is not too cold as this can shock the roof of the mouth and ruin the taste of your next drink.

Wine tasting is not as hard as you think. You don’t need to have formal training and anyone can do it.

You shouldn’t cup the glass in the palm of your hand, instead you should hold it by the stem while wine tasting. One thing that individuals don’t realize is that the palm of your hand is warm and this can warm up the wine therefore changing the sample.

Sampling the wine doesn’t just involve putting the wine in your mouth and roll it about your tongue a couple of times before spitting or swallowing.

Looking at the coloring is the first thing you should do when wine sampling. The glasses served up should always be clean and clear in order for you take a good look at the wine. Use a white backdrop when checking the colour of the wine, this will enable you to see the true colour and clarity of the wine. White doesn’t always mean white when it come to wine, you can sometimes find white wine with a brown, yellow or even green shade. Again red isn’t always a pure red, you can have many different shaded but older red wine tend to be a little lighter.

Try doing a rim test and look at the coloring of the wine, this can give you some indication as to the age or flavour. You can tell the age of the wine by tilting the glass and observing the different colors, a purple colour will be a young wine and a brown color will indicate an older wine.

The next step is to smell the wine, first swirl the wine around the glass to expose the wine to the air, position the glass close to your nostril and inhale deeply. The wine could have been in the bottle for a little as six months to many years so by twirling the wine you will be releasing the flavors. mixing wine from the bottle with air is no different that mixing all the ingredients together when cooking.
